    About

My journey into Ballroom started in 1997, it's divided into smooth and rhythm, with a syllabus which is either International or American style. With smooth dances we move leading with our heals eg Fox Trot, Waltz and Tango. Rhythm dancing we move  on the balls of our feet eg the Latin dances (Salsa, Rumba, Cha Cha, Merengue) and American social dances such as West & East Coast Swing, Jive and Hustle.

I gravitated towards the rhythm dances very quickly and found a natural affinity. I always said that if he were to teach my own lessons I would focus on the rhythm dances, which is exactly what I do.

Salsa, Rumba and Cha Cha have their origins in Cuba mixed with a lot of African influence from the Slave trade. Dancing was a way for the various cultures to express themselves. These dances also made their way to South America where variations do exist. Merengue has it's roots firmly in Brazil and was originally a dance the slaves did while shackled in chains. East Coast Swing is a branch of one of over 60 dances that started with the Lindy Hop (named after Charles Lindbergh) in 1920's America. Hustle is a relatively modern dance that got going in the New York clubs of the 70's with Salsa and East & West Coast Swing.

Salsa, Salsa with a tap, Rumba, Cha Cha, Hustle, West & East Coast Swing double & triple step are all similar in that a lot of the patterns are interchangeable. Merengue is an easy to learn fast paced dance. They are all fun to learn and contemporary music is easily adapted to the various dance steps.

    STRETCH

    About

Teaching and practising Stretch has radically enhanced my life both physically and mentally. Modern day technology during recent years has drastically reduced our physical fitness. Many of us  roll out of a comfortable bed, drive to work, sit all day, drive home and then spend the evening on a comfy sofa. Hense as a culture all of these have contributed to the demise in our posture and general health.

Stretching can be as easy or challenging as you'd like to make it. We'll stretch from head to foot, focusing on core stability, slowly and methodically with elements of  Pilates and Yoga included. Flexibility through stretching is developed over time and with much practice. As we start to stretch our muscles  automatic response is to tense or contract. This is one of the ways that injuries may occur. We should also start stretching very gradually and warm the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons to reduce the risk of injury. As we start the stretching process the muscles naturally contract as a reflex reaction in response to the impending physical activity. It takes the brain about 30 seconds to send a signal to the muscle in question that there's hopefully no trauma or injury occurring and the muscle will naturally start to respond and relax. This is how we strengthen and develop our muscles and they become supple with increased flexibility. We can then stretch deeper into the stretch and this is what we call "developmental stretching". Exercises are performed standing, sitting, lying down on our back, sides and front. All major muscle groups are utilised.

Stretching is performed mindfully which for me means we are thinking about what we are doing. We are not clock watching, it's not about speed, number of repetitions or aerobic activity and we will burn calories. It will strengthen your entire body and all important core and pelvic floor muscles (muscles that run from our pubic bone in front to our upper gluteal and lower back muscles) that support our bladder and lower large intestine. Stretching will relax your body which will in turn relax your mind and spirit. After stretching you'll feel invigorated and better able to cope with the modern day stresses. This routine will truly strengthen and develop your mind and body.
